OUGD203 Evaluation

This module has been my strongest to date where I have produced some of my best work. I have developed many new skills during this module and I'm over the moon i faced my fear of returning to screen printing to produce a range of t-shirts. Getting away from the mac and getting hands on with my designs was a great feeling.
I have also gained skills in developing initial ideas. In previous modules i would jump straight onto illustrator and start experimenting with layouts and scale. However with this brief i decided to use design sheets initially to get some quick ideas sketched out. Im also very happy with the final vinyl sleeves. If i were to do it again i would have the logos embossed and the stock would be thicker.

Initially my research was very defined to existing music labels however after broadening the range i researched into - i found this helped me become more experimental and playful with the layout for my final logo.
Throughout the module, i tried to keep a constant update on research during initial design development through to layouts, colours etc - to do with the range of products i used to advertise the re-brand of Domino Records.

I can identify several strengths in my work for this module. I feel i have been versatile with my designs using type in this brief. I also feel i have grown stronger in my ability to keep a constant update on my blogs for what i have been doing on a regular basis. I was pleased to finally screen print during a brief. After initially making several mistakes which cost me time and money - i finally started to produce my range of t-shirts using different designs and colours. I really enjoyed this new process and feel i will be using the screen printing facilities a lot over summer and into my third year. I also feel my work is going in the direction i like to design and produce. I like to get hands on with my work and intend to research into more medias i could develop my work towards.

I found that i have become more interested in stocks which i use to print my resolutions on. However i don't feel i explored potential stock for my vinyl sleeve fully. If i was to do this again i would print on a slightly thicker card and emboss the logo through. A weakness i need to address in time management in briefs with a lengthy deadline. I approach the brief feeling confident with time etc but half way through realise i have not been working to my full potential. I am however satisfied with the work i produced in this module and feel it is some of my strongest work - i just wish i was a week ahead of myself so i would have had time to produce my full range of 6 t-shirts.

T-Shirts - Final resolutions

Here they are - the final range of t-shirts. As seen on the images below - the colours came out very well. The t-shirts work well as singles and as a range because of their number markings down the left hand sleeve.

Range - Revised website

Another part to this brief was to bring our products to the web. After visiting the Domino Records website several hundred times i decided to look into re-developing the layout and style of the site.
Below is the home page which will be immediately shown to the viewer. The home page would also include advertisements from signed artists, upcoming concerts and gigs.

Centre image: Latest news page. This will have a scroll down section to go back in date to previous news.

Above: The store page will be selling such products like the t-shirt range, vinyl collection etc.

Range - T-Shirts (final resolutions)

Here they are - my final t-shirt range. Once again - I'm over the moon. I feel the best decision I made was to produce this range with a different colour pallet for each shirt. The designs turned out better than i thought they would and the colour makes each shirt unique and eye-catching. The concept behind the lyrics to a track from each vinyl i feel was a good decision which made the link between my range possible.

Range - T-Shirts (production)

Okay so here is a quick update using slightly lower quality on my phone camera - sorry about that. Below are two screens which have been exposed and around about to be printed. You can see how i have masked off the design from printing ares which have been exposed accidently and to make a boarder for the ink not to cross over to another design.

Above are 3 of my final 4 resolutions which i have so far printed. Things to do are details to go on the sleeves and place the logo on the back below the collar.

Range - Vinyl's with centers

So here they are. The final resolutions along with the freshly designed centers. Now i have finalised this part of the project - its time to move onto printing the t-shirts. The range is developing well and im very pleased with the finish of the vinyl sleeves and record centers.

Range - Centre of the vinyls

Because i was buying vinyls to put inside the sleeves - i needed to design some centers to replace the old ones which would not give a good finish to my designs.
I decided to keep it simple - and use the numbers i placed on the sleeve to each vinyl for their centers. Below are the finish pieces before i got them printed onto a sticker stock and last cut through.

Range - Vinyl (final resolutions)

The final vinyls have been printed ... and they look beautiful. Am I pleased, yes, yes I am. After printing my first mockup and correcting the scale, layout and adding some extra details - they were ready for printing.
I decided to make the vinyl sleeves work individually as well as a series. I number each at the bottom with 6 stars, one of which is made with an outlined stroke to show which number vinyl it is.

The vinyls came out well. Im pleased with both the colour pallet and layout. If i was to reproduce them I would have them printed on a slightly thicker stock. Apart from that minor negative - I'm more than happy with the final resolutions and feel they represent the record label well.

Range - Vinyl (first mockup)

It was finally time to produce my first mockup vinyl sleeve. Below is the development after print, of the sleeve being produced. The colour pallet was nice and I am happy with the stock which is matt not gloss. I feel a gloss finish will make the colours too bright which does not match the colour pallet in relation to my target audience.

The first mockup came out well. As mentioned above i was happy enough with the finish from the printer - however some of my scales were incorrect and made it hard to actually put a vinyl in.

Range - Vinyl Sleeve (Final series)

Here are the final resolutions for the collection of 6 vinyl sleeves i will be producing to commemorate the re-branding of Domino Records. I am very happy with the final outcome - and im very much looking forward to seeing the prints.

Range - Vinyl Sleeve 7

Initial layout of the logo is shown below. This is where the logo will be placed - and to the correct scale. Using the new imagery i will produce a mock-up which will guide my design. I will then move onto producing the series of 6 covers which will have all finishing details.

Below - First mock-up vinyl cover. This mock-up lacks in a lot of detail at this minute. The main reason for this exercise is to measure layout and scale to see if its fits a vinyl record correctly.

Range - Vinyl Sleeve 6

Going further into the hand rendered vinyl covers - i made myself another mixed paint canvas and once again started photographing the image using different apertures, shutter speeds etc.

Below - 3 spread sheets of images which i take using the canvas paint above. This new range of imagery will be used in the design process of my final vinyl covers.

Range - Screen printing

Just a quick post to show the preparation of my screens which i will be printing my t-shirt designs on. Each screen is exposed to light with my design printed on a acetate below. The design is burnt through the screen so the ink can get through onto the shirts.

Range - T-Shirts mockups

Quick post once again just to show some quick mockups of the shirts i printed out. I ran out of colour in my printer, so black and white will have to do. These mockups are all to scale and i have a very good feeling about them at the minute. Keep up to date for the shirts being printed.

Range - T-Shirts development 6

One last detail to be added to the shirts. Each shirt will have the new Domino Records logo printed below the collar along with the same number and stars which relates from the limited edition vinyls to the lyrics on said shirt.
